Box Score 2 PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The University of Pikeville softball team dropped a pair of Mid-South Conference games at Shawnee State (Ohio) on Friday, losing 4-2 in game one and 8-5 in the finale at Boone Coleman Field.
None of the Bears registered more than one hit in the opener as catcher
Eady Beth Connally led the way going 1-for-3 with an RBI double. In game two, second baseman
Emily Castle hit a home run and
Taylor Weeks got hot going 3-for-4, but Shawnee State was hard to catch after scoring six runs in the second inning.
Sydney Morris (9-10) threw a complete game for UPIKE (13-24, 9-19 MSC) to start the day, allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Morris started and took the loss in game two as well, but lasted just three innings after allowing six runs on seven hits.
Miranda Owens closed out the final three innings, cooling down the SSU (21-16, 13-13 MSC) bats for just two more runs on four hits with a strikeout. Allie Chapman (12-8) and Tara Prater (1-3) tallied the wins for Shawnee State as Chapman allowed just three hits in her seven innings.
The teams traded runs in the first inning of game one before Pikeville took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning Connally's double down the left-field line. The lead was short lived though as Shawnee State finally got to Morris for three runs in the bottom of the fifth and held on the rest of the way.
Pikeville went from three hits to 12 in game two, but with Shawnee State being dominant at the plate with runners on base, the improvement didn't change the outcome. It all started in the second inning when SSU got a two-run bomb from Hannah Foster and a two-run single from Kirsti Yates on its way to a 6-0 lead.
UPIKE ended up scoring two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, but it was down 7-1 at that time and SSU added an insurance run in the sixth innings to help thwart the comeback.
Pikeville is back in action at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday at Rio Grande (Ohio).
