Box Score 2 PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Sparked by a five-run inning in game one and steady offense in the finale, fourth-ranked Georgetown (Ky.) was able to sweep the University of Pikeville baseball team 7-3 and 7-1 on Saturday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
The Tigers' powerful first baseman Martin Lemus was a load to handle all day, finishing a combined 4-of-6 with a home run, five RBIs, two doubles, two runs scored and a walk. Combining that with six different looks on the mound proved too much for UPIKE to handle despite battling at the plate.
While they came up on the losing end twice, the Bears were only outhit 11-10 in game one and were down just 4-1 heading into the seventh and final inning of game two. But like the five-run fifth in the opener, the Tigers added three runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
The teams will play the final game of the series at Noon ET on Sunday in Pikeville. On Saturday, UPIKE dropped to 21-29 overall and 6-19 in Mid-South Conference play, while Georgetown is now 37-6 overall and 22-3 in the league.
Tomorrow's game will be the season finale for the Bears as they will finish just outside of the field for the MSC Championship. Still, even before the outcome of Sunday's game, the 21 wins are the most at Pikeville since winning 28 in 2001.
Picking up wins on the mound for Georgetown was Tyler Arthur (7-0) in game one, scattering six hits for two runs in seven innings with five strikeouts and Brian Barry (8-1) after giving up one run on eight hits in six innings with just two strikeouts.
Zak Sutherland (4-6) lost the opener after allowing seven runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts in eight innings, while
Corey Gilligan dropped to 3-7 after scattering 12 hits for six runs with five strikeouts in the finale.
Trailing 7-3 in game one, Pikeville hit two straight singles and
Sean Ryan was hit by a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate with just one out. Closer Edwin Santiago entered with the bases juiced and promptly got a fly out and fielder's choice grounder to pick up his third save and end the threat.
Designated hitter
Cody Chagnon provided the only offense for the Bears in game two as his leadoff bomb in the fourth made it a 2-1 game. But the Tigers responded with single runs in the fifth and sixth frames before putting the game away with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Ten Pikeville seniors were honored after the games on Saturday. Tomorrow will be their final game at Johnnie LeMaster Field. Those seniors include: Adams, Gilligan, Ryan, Sutherland,
Brad Andrews,
Bryan Bradley,
Chaz Contreras, Keenen Freitag,
