CENTERVILLE, Ohio -- Although it came up short of a team championship for the first time this season, the University of Pikeville women's bowling team put up some big numbers and ended up as the runner-up of the Orange & Black Classic on Sunday at Poelking Lanes South.
The host Bears qualified first with a total team pin fall of 8,344, but were edged 3-2 in the championship-round finals by Urbana. Maryland Eastern Shore had qualified second with a score of 8,230 and Lindenwood (Mo.) was third at 8,073.
Before falling to Urbana, UPIKE had tallied a 3-0 win over Bowling Green State, and rolled past Wright State 3-1 in the semifinals.
Fallon Tallman was the leading individual with an overall score of 1,087 pins at an average of 217.4 per game. Other finishers in the top 10 were Shelby Fromm in sixth with 1,062 pins (212.4) and Megan Hedgespeth in 10th place with 1,024 pins (204.8).
Bowling for UPIKE's junior-varsity team, Christine Johnston ended up with the best score of the entire classic, tallying a score of 1,131 at a 226.2 average.
