PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- After two weeks of long road trips, the University of Pikeville football team is looking forward to being back on the home turf for a matchup with Cumberland that has provided some interesting results over the past two seasons.
For two straight games, 60 minutes hasn't been enough to decide the outcome between the Bears and Bulldogs.
Last season, Cumberland, ranked 14th at the time, overcame a 30-14 deficit coming into the fourth quarter to force overtime. There the Bears missed a long field-goal attempt and the Bulldogs answered with a rushing touchdown on their possession.
In 2013, Cumberland came back from a 35-21 deficit heading into the final quarter before using two run plays in overtime to take the lead. UPIKE threw three incomplete passes and was sacked on its possession.
This season hopes to be different for the Bears, for one, the Bulldogs come into the game with a losing record for the first time since the 2006 season. UPIKE is also averaging over 75 more yards of total offense per game, including nearly 100 more on the ground.
SIDS Awareness Game
The Mid-South Conference is once again helping to get the message out about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The league began to champion the effort in 2014 after the unfortunate effects of this mysterious death touched the lives of Georgetown assistant coach Dwayne Ellison and his family in May of 2013.
No one is clear on why SIDS happens, but it's the leading cause of death in infants. There are no indicators to lead to prevention of the stealing of the most fragile and precious in this world. However, the Ellisons are committed to helping raise funds to support research. Finley105.org is the organization the family created to raise and distribute funds.
A Finley Foundation for SIDS Research and Awareness has been set up, donations can be mailed to:
