Smith, Williams named players of the week

ATHENS, Tenn. – The University of Pikeville opened conference play on Saturday with a nice win, and on Monday two players were rewarded with player of the week honors.

Junior running back Amon Williams was named offensive player of the week while sophomore kicker Isaac Smith is the special teams player of the week.

It was the first time this season and the second time in his career Williams has been honored, and it's the second time this season and for Smith, it was his second win of the season and the third time in his career.

Williams, from Cumming, Ga., ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 48-7 win over the University of Rio Grande. He averaged 5.1 yards per carry while running for touchdowns covering two and 11 yards. He also caught an eight-yard pass.

It was the eighth time in his career Williams has crossed the 100-yard threshold in a game. Already the school's all-time leading scorer, Willaims moved into fourth on the rushing list in a career. He now has carried for 2,319 yards.

Smith was responsible for 12 points on Saturday, hitting all six extra-point kicks and both field goal tries. He hit field goals covering 33 and 46 yards in the win. The latter was the longest of the year for an AAC kicker.

He has accounted for 45 points, one shy of leading the league this season.

The Hixson, Tenn., native is now perfect on 78 extra point kicks in his career, with 27 of them coming this season. He is also 6 for 6 on field goals this season.

UPike is now 4-2 on the season and will remain on the road this week, traveling to play Point (Ga.) University on Saturday in a game to be played in Valley, Ala.

The Bears return home on Oct. 24 to play Bluefield (Va.) University on Homecoming Day.
