PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Aundrea Matchen tallied a career-high 27 points and nine rebounds and Kayla Day helped the offense along with a career-best 10 assists to lead the 22nd-ranked University of Pikeville women's basketball team over Midway 111-63 on Tuesday at the East Ky. Expo Center.
Freshman Adison Corder chipped in with 16 points, Rachel Lee added 12 and Devin Conley and Kelah Eldridge had 11 and 10 points, respectively, as part of five Bears who scored in double figures.
UPIKE used defense to limit Midway to just a 24.6 percent showing from the field on its way to building a 15-point lead in the first quarter before pushing the advantage up to 23 at 52-29 just before halftime.
Midway's last lead for the game came at 4-3 early in the first quarter, but it trailed by double digits late in the period when Sandra Davis added a layup off a dish from Day. It never got the deficit back into single digits, instead the Bears pulled ahead by as many as 52 points in the fourth quarter on a Corder free throw to make it 111-59.
Things really went south for Midway at the start of the third quarter when UPIKE went on a 15-0 run to turn a 22-point lead into a 37-point rout.
UPIKE dominated the backboards 62-42 and had 26 assists, compared to just nine for Midway. The Bears didn't shoot lights out, but the 47.5 percent mark from the field was more than enough with their stifling defense.
Up next for the Bears is a 6 p.m. ET meeting with Ohio-Lancaster on Saturday in the East Ky. Expo Center.
