Baseball Shut Out by Rio Grande, West Va. Tech on Saturday

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Offense was hard to come by for the University of Pikeville baseball team on Saturday as it combined for just six hits and no runs in a 6-0 loss to Rio Grande (Ohio) and 2-0 setback to West Virginia Tech.

The Bears opened the day with a 10 a.m. ET start against Rio Grande and found themselves down 3-0 after the first inning. The RedStorm added a single run in the third and two more in the fifth as the Bears could only muster one hit each from Jacob DiThomas, Josh Bailey and Nicolas Gonzales.

Rio Grande's Kyle Miller pitched a full seven innings to pick up the win, striking out three batters and walking just one. A.J. Carkner took the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Bailey and Gonzales both connected for doubles, but Bailey's was the only hit in the top of the first and Gonzalez's was the lone hit in UPIKE's side of the seventh.

The troublesome first inning saw Rio Grande's Grant Tamane draw a walk and later score on a bases-loaded free pass. A two-run single by Chris Ford followed and the Bears never recovered.

In game two, the Bears got a solid pitching performance from James Brooks but failed to score and had some costly errors. UPIKE outhit West Virginia Tech 3-2 but led the game in errors by the same margin.

Brooks brought it to the Golden Bears, pitching a complete six innings while allowing two runs on two hits with six strikeouts and just one walk. Josh Smetana earned the win in five inning of work with five strikeouts while Kyle Sager got the save after two shutout innings with a strikeout.

The Golden Bears scored their go-ahead run in the bottom of the first inning and added some insurance with another in the fourth. The first run was the result of two straight errors to open the game, putting runners on first and second for Tech.

Outfielder Dylan Harvey took advantage with the only double of the game to score outfielder Hugo Rodridguez which would end up being enough for the win. For the Bears, outfielders Mike Peluffo and Josh Bailey and catcher Cody Chagnon all singled. Bailey also stole a base, as did DiThomas after a walk.

UPIKE will meet the same two teams on Sunday, starting with Rio Grande at 10 a.m. and West Virginia Tech at 1 p.m.
