Baseball Bounces Back with Sweep of Rio Grande, W. Va. Tech on Sunday

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The University of Pikeville baseball team finished an even 2-2 during its weekend trip to Savannah, Ga., with Rio Grande (Ohio) and West Virginia Tech after claiming a pair of wins on Sunday.

UPIKE (5-4) failed to score a run in two losses on Saturday, but bounced back for a 6-2 win over Rio Grande and 10-5 decision against West Virginia Tech.

Newcomer Dalton Dahley picked up the win on the mound in the opener, allowing a run on three hits with seven strikeouts in six innings. J.P. Henderlight was the game-two winner after taking over a 5-5 game in the fifth and allowing three runs on two hits in 1 2/3 innings. The Bears scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.

The Bears outhit the RedStorm 6-5 but none of their players had more than one hit or one RBI. Rio Grande didn't score its two runs until the sixth and seventh innings when it was already down 6-0. None of UPIKE's hits went for extra bases, but Scottie Whitaker, Mike Peluffo, Patrick Schloss all stole a base, while Connor Osborne swiped three bases.

Against the Golden Bears, UPIKE's bats were even hotter, leading the game in hits 12-8. Catcher Cody Chagnon rattled the Tech staff with three doubles for four RBIs, while third baseman Erik Manning roped an RBI triple. Shortstop Jacob DiThomas played big as well, going 2 for 4 with an RBI, run scored and stolen base.

The Bears were in front 5-2 heading into the top of the fifth inning before the Golden Bears struck for three runs to tie things up. The comeback didn't slow down UPIKE though as it scored five runs over the next two innings, including four in a decisive bottom of the fifth inning.

In the fifth, Schloss hit a two-RBI single to put the Bears in front, while Chagnon added some insurance with a two-run double.

UPIKE is scheduled to be back in action this Saturday and Sunday, hosting Goshen (Ind.) at Johnnie LeMaster Field. Play is set to begin at Noon ET on Saturday.
