Baseball Drops First Two Games of Series at Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville baseball team held early leads in both games at Georgetown on Sunday afternoon but fell victim to two comebacks from the Tigers for a pair of 14-4 and 4-3 losses.

UPIKE (9-6, 0-2 MSC) led 2-0 after the top of the third inning in the opener before Georgetown (3-5, 2-0 MSC) tied things up in the bottom of the frame and went on to tally a five-run fifth and six-run sixth to put the game away.

In the nightcap, the Bears were up 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but the Tigers fired back with three runs to tie it before pushing across the winning run in the seventh. Tanner Unkel scored the go-ahead run after reaching first on a sacrifice-bunt attempt and later scoring on a Jovan Hernandez single to right field.

The details leading up to the winning run were hectic as Unkel reached on the fielder's choice, stole second, then moved to third on a bobble by UPIKE catcher Zach Greene. Georgetown's next batter reached second on what was ruled umpire's interference, setting up Hernandez with the winning one-out single with runners on first and third.

The Bears had built their lead with two runs in the second inning on a ground ball hit by Zach Nothwehr, followed by a single run in the fourth inning when Erik Manning stole home.

UPIKE took their early 2-0 lead in the opener when Nicolas Gonzales was walked a Cody Chagnon belted a home run in the next at-bat. The Bears, however, wouldn't score again until the seventh inning when they were already trailing 13-2.

Apart from the long ball, right fielder Mike Peluffo had the best offensive game in the opener, going 2 for 4 with an RBI double. In game two, three Bears had one hit each, while Nothwehr had the RBI without a hit.

A.J. Carkner took the first loss on the mound, giving up seven runs on nine hits with five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings and James Brooks took the game-two loss after scattering six hits for four runs with two strikeouts and four walks in 6 1/3 frames.

UPIKE is back in action at Noon ET on Monday in the series finale at Georgetown.
