Softball Keeps Up Winning Ways at West Virginia Tech

CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- Make it four wins in a row for the University of Pikeville softball team as it ended the week with a pair of wins against West Virginia Tech on Sunday morning. The Bears topped the Golden Bears 6-0 in game one, followed by a 9-2 win in six innings.

UPIKE (4-2) outhit West Virginia Tech (2-6) 10-1 in the opener as Sydney Morris struck out 10 and went a full seven innings for the win without walking a batter. She got a lift offensively from third baseman Breana Pineda who drove in four runs on two hits, including her second home run of the season.

In the run-rule shortened second game, it was Hawley Ill going the distance for the win in the circle, striking out three and allowing two runs on seven hits with one walk. The Bears only outhit Tech 10-7, but never trailed as they took a 6-0 lead after the top of the fourth inning.

Designated hitter Haley Jo Patton and second baseman Whitney Back both hit doubles, while Back also drove in three runs on two hits and drew a walk. Even while pitching, Ill was still perfect from the plate, going 2 for 2 with a walk to score two runs.

UPIKE was good on the base paths in game two, getting stolen bases from centerfielder Brandi Jo Howard, right fielder Sydney Beckelhymer and Back. Game-one right fielder Kayla Brown added a stolen base in the opener.

The Bears led built a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game one and kept that same lead until the top of the fifth when Pineda broke the game open with her two-run shot over the fence.

This is the first four-game winning streak for the Bears since sweeping doubleheaders against Bluefield (Va.) and Cumberlands last season between April 9-11.

Next up for UPIKE is a home doubleheader on Tuesday against Union at 3 p.m. ET.
