PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville softball team has won six straight games for the first time since 2011 after a doubleheader sweep of Union on Tuesday at Paul Butcher Field.
The Bears got a big performance from starter Sydney Morris in the opener, scattering five hits for two runs with six strikeouts to pull off a 10-2 win in six innings.
Game two was tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when UPIKE tallied four runs on three hits, including the go-ahead run by Hawley Ill who tripled and later came home on a throw to second base. The Bears ended up winning 7-4 as starter Lauren Barnes got the decision after allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts in four innings.
Third baseman Breana Pineda continued to swing a hot bat, hitting her third home run of the season during a 3-for-3 showing in the run-rule shortened opener. Pineda also added a double and another hit in game two to finish with four hits on the day.
Centerfielder Brandi Jo Howard also had a good day, tallying a double and stolen base in game one, followed by another stolen base and run scored in the nightcap.
Ill was the offensive catalyst in game two, finishing 3 for 4 with a triple and run scored. Left fielder Haley Jo Patton added an RBI double in game two, along with a walk and run.
The Bears (6-2) travel to NCAA Div. I Morehead State for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET.
