NAIA Preview: No. 7 UPIKE Takes on No. 10 Concordia in Friday’s Second Round

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The University of Pikeville and Concordia (Calif.) men's basketball teams have never met before, and there's no better time to get acquainted with each other than in the second round of the NAIA National Championship.

Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. ET on Friday in historic Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City.

  • There will be 16 teams left playing in NAIA Men's Basketball by Friday morning. To make it into that group, the seventh-seeded Bears won their first-round game against Bethel (Tenn.) 94-86 behind 21 points from Macari Brooks. UPIKE needed all of Brooks' points as it was outrebounded 57-40 by the Wildcats. Concordia, the tournament's No. 10 seed, got by Oklahoma City 74-62 in the first round with Matt Scott pouring in a game-high 18 points.
  • Heading into Friday's game, UPIKE has a 10-7 all-time record in the NAIA National Championship, including a 2-1 mark in second-round action. The Bears haven't won in the round of 16 since 2011 when they went on to win the program's first and only NAIA championship. Last season, the Bears lost 88-83 to St. Gregory's (Okla.) in the second round.
  • UPIKE head coach Kelly Wells, in his ninth season at the school, is 7-2 all-time at nationals. His first trip to the tournament was the magical 2011 run in which his unseeded Bears won five straight games. Since then, Wells is 2-2 including Thursday's win over Bethel.
  • Breaking up UPIKE's record by rounds, it is 4-5 in the first round, 2-1 in the second, a perfect 2-0 in the quarterfinals, 1-1 in the semifinals and 1-0 in the national championship game.
  • Through 17 games at the national tournament, UPIKE's 94 points scored against Bethel on Thursday are the second most in program history. The only time it scored more was in the 2011 semifinals with a 110-99 win over Martin Methodist (Tenn.).
  • Colt Chapman hosted a block party against Bethel. The 6-5 junior, who didn't start for just the fourth time this season, was a game-changer in the post with six blocks. A UPIKE player had twice blocked three shots in a game this season, but Chapman went ahead and doubled that up in the national tournament. Chapman had blocked two shots in a game three times this season.
  • Michael Eneh with the dunk heard round Kansas City in the first half on Thursday. And it came when the Bears needed it the most, clinging on to a 9-8 lead over Bethel. After the fast-break flush, the Bears continued on for a 14-2 run that changed the pace of the game. Eneh made his third start of the season and the 6-11 senior answered the call with a team-best eight rebounds to go along with three points.
  • Christian Leach a quiet assassin on the floor. Leach isn't the most vocal player on the court, but his overall play, most notably his defense, has been heard loud and clear by opponents for the past few weeks. Getting his fourth start of the season against Bethel, Leach matched a season high with six steals, scored seven points and pulled down four rebounds.
  • Speaking of blocks, UPIKE's nine total blocks against Bethel were a season high. Apart from Chapman doing his best Dikembe Mutumbo impression, Eneh added two blocks and Brooks came up with one.
  • High-scoring Bears continue that trend in Kansas City as they scored at least 90 points for the 21st time this season. Entering the tournament, UPIKE is the NAIA's highest scoring team at 95.2 points per game.
  • The No. 7 seed has good vibes around it as every team seeded there has won their first-round matchup since 2005.
  • Concordia improved to 10-2 all-time in the first round of the NAIA National Championship. The Eagles are two-time national champions, most recently winning it all in 2012, one year after the Bears.
  • Interesting fact about Concordia: Three-time Olympic gold medalist and women's beach volleyball champion Misty May-Treanor is an alumna.
  • A word from the coach (on Bethel win): "The team had to overcome adversity," said UPIKE head coach Kelly Wells. "K.J. (Manigault) and K.K. (Simmons) played limited minutes due to foul trouble. Macari (Brooks) stepped up for us, along with Christian (Leach) and Mike (Eneh) on the glass. Mike's size altered shots and Christian had a solid game on defense. We have to get better on the boards, but I'm proud of this team."
