COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The bats were quiet for the University of Pikeville softball team as it was outhit a combined 19-4 in two losses at No. 6 Lindsey Wilson on Sunday. The Blue Raiders won game one 9-1 in five innings and game two 8-0 in six.
Lindsey Wilson improved to 23-6 overall and 7-3 in the Mid-South Conference, while the Bears dropped to 9-11 overall and 3-7 in league play after losing all four games of the weekend series.
No Bear had more than one hit, but first baseman Sarah Kinney got the most done, driving in a run during her 1 for 2 performance in the opener.
The Blue Raiders hit four home runs on the day, including two from centerfielder Chelsea Showers. Designated player Andrea Whelan added one in game one and catcher Bailey Mize went yard in the finale. Showers was the offensive leader overall, going 4 for 5 with five RBIs and three walks to go along with a double.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning of game one, UPIKE answered with its lone run of the day in the top of the second. Haley Jo Patton singled, moved to second on a walk, then third on a groundout and eventually came home on Kinney's single through the hole at shortstop.
The Blue Raiders added two more runs in the second inning, two again in the fourth and three runs in the fifth frame to bring the game to an early close.
Lauren Barnes (2-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on three hits with one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings, while Lyndsey Parden improved to 7-2 after scattering three hits for a run with five strikeouts in five innings.
With UPIKE not able to score in game two, the Blue Raiders put together a slow building eight-run lead through six innings. Lindsey Wilson scored three runs in the first two innings before adding five in the fifth and sixth combined.
Leading 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Blue Raiders got a quick boost from Mize whose home run drove in three runs. Second baseman Amanda Trampe ended the game in the sixth inning when her single past the shortstop scored Showered waiting on third. Â Â Â
Hawley Ill (3-4) gave up six runs on nine hits in five innings from the circle without a strikeout for the Bears, while Casey Bryan earned her 10th win of the season after allowing just one hit and striking out eight batters in six innings.
UPIKE is back in action at 3 p.m. ET on Tuesday, hosting Cumberlands at Paul Butcher Field.
