PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville baseball team struggled to string together hits as it lost 9-0 and 6-1 in the first two games of a weekend series with St. Catharine on Saturday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
St. Catharine (25-9, 10-3 MSC) outhit the Bears (15-20, 0-13) 22-8 on the day as UPIKE tallied just four hits in each of the two losses. The teams play the final game of the series at Noon ET on Sunday.

St. Catharine 9, UPIKE 0
John Werner came into Saturday's opener as one of the top pitchers in the NAIA with a 7-1 record and 0.60 ERA, and his performance against UPIKE lived up the billing. Werner struck out 10 and allowed just three hits while pitching eight shutout innings.
Bryce Carden (2-2) opposed him, but scattered seven hits for seven runs with four strikeouts in seven innings to take the loss. Of UPIKE's four hits, third baseman Erik Manning had two of them, including the only extra-base hit of the game with a double.
Second baseman Alfredo Bohorquez was a monster for the Patriots, driving in two runs on three hits and stealing a game-high three bases.
St. Catharine wasted no time taking a lead as centerfielder Harold Diaz hit an RBI single to center that scored Bohorquez from third after swiping a pair of bases. The Patriots went on to score three more runs in each of the next two innings to lead 7-0 after three.
With the help of two UPIKE errors and just two hits, the Patriots added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to end the scoring.

St. Catharine 6, UPIKE 1
UPIKE started James Brooks kept the Bears in game two for just over six innings as it was only a 2-1 St. Catharine lead heading into the top of the seventh.
The Patriots scored two runs on a double by Diaz in the third inning before going scoreless for three frames. In the meantime, the Bears scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when pinch runner Connor Osborne was bunted over to third and then came home on a wild throw by catcher Drew Kissel.
It would be the only UPIKE score of the game though as St. Catharine put things away with a four-run seventh that included an RBI single from Bohorquez and two RBI double by Diaz.
Brooks lasted 6 1/3 innings before exiting the game for Cody Clark. Brooks' final line was six runs given up on 11 hits with five strikeouts and no walks to fall to 2-6 on the season. Steven Borkowski (5-3) picked up the win after allowing a run on four hits with eight strikeouts in a complete seven innings.
First baseman Nicolas Gonzales led UPIKE at the plate with two hits, including a double, while Diaz put together three doubles for the Patriots, driving in four runs.
