MSC Championship (Live Video/Stats)
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- On the eve of the 2015 Mid-South Conference Baseball Championship, three University of Pikeville student-athletes were named to the all-conference teams, league officials announced on Tuesday at the annual awards banquet.
Leading the way for UPIKE was Josh Bailey on the first team as a utility selection. Bailey hit .406 in 41 starts for the Bears this season with eight doubles, two triples, 20 RBIs and a team-leading 23 stolen bases. Bailey primarily played centerfield but moved to the designated-hitter spot when he was the starting pitcher.
Bailey made eight starts on the mound, putting together a 1-6 record with a 7.34 ERA. The junior struck out 17 batters while throwing 38 total innings.
Shortstop Jacob DiThomas and catcher Cody Chagnon also picked up awards after being named Second Team All-MSC. For Chagnon, it is his second straight all-conference honor, while DiThomas was picked to the team as an extra player.
DiThomas hit for the second best average on the team at .333 while adding two home runs, five doubles and a triple with 17 RBIs. He also stole nine bases and had a .935 fielding percentage while starting all 44 games for UPIKE.
Chagnon hit .304 in 39 games, collecting four home runs, 13 doubles and a triple while driving in a team-high 29 runs. The senior posted a team-best .539 slugging percentage and drew 16 walks.
The trio of all-conference honorees and the rest of the No.-8 seed Bears open the MSC Championship at 10 a.m. ET on Wednesday against top-seeded Campbellsville at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Seven UPIKE players also received Academic All-MSC honors at the banquet for having at least a 3.25 GPA and being a sophomore or higher. Those Bears include James Brooks, Cody Clark, Dakota Gilikson, Nicolas Gonzales, Mike Peluffo, Scottie Whitaker and Chagnon.
