No. 8 Baseball Drops MSC Championship Opener to No. 1 Campbellsville 7-1

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- A steady stream of runs and solid pitching helped top-seeded Campbellsville beat No. 8-seed University of Pikeville 7-1 in the first round of the 2015 Mid-South Conference Baseball Championship on Wednesday morning at Bowling Green Ballpark.

The Tigers scored their first run in the second inning before adding two more in the fourth, fifth and seventh frames. UPIKE loaded the bases in the seventh and scored on a hit batter, but couldn't produce anything else while stranding eight on base.

Campbellsville (28-9) starter Indalecio Romo (5-3) scattered seven hits in seven innings, but struck out eight batters and saw his defense turn in three double plays to pick up the win with one unearned run. UPIKE's James Brooks dropped to 2-8 on the season after allowing three runs on four hits with four walks and no strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

Logan Sales pitched the final 4 1/3 for the Bears, giving up four more runs on five hits. The Pikeville pitchers combined for just one strikeout, although Campbellsville only outhit the Bears 9-7.

Catcher Cody Chagnon paced the Bears (15-27) with three hits and left fielder Zach Nothwehr picked up an RBI after being hit. Designated hitter Mike Peluffo scored the lone run in the seventh after he and second baseman Patrick Schloss led off the frame with back-to-back singles.

Rightfielder Alex Kline has the best day for the Tigers, going 3 for 3 with two doubles, an RBI and four runs scored.

Campbellsville got on the board first when Kline hit a one-out double in the second inning, moved to third on a single and eventually hustled home on Casey Scott's sacrifice fly. The fourth and fifth innings were pivotal for Campbellsville as it scored twice on two hits in the fourth and twice again on one hit and two UPIKE errors in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.

It looked like the Bears had a chance to rally in the seventh after the first three batters reached base, but from there they struck out and were forced out at home on the next two at bats. The hit by pitch helped UPIKE get on the board, but centerfielder Josh Bailey's hard-hit grounder towards first base was scooped up to end the threat.

The Bears failed to get a hit over the next two innings, sending them to an elimination game at 10 a.m. ET on Thursday. UPIKE will face the loser between No. 4 Georgetown and No. 5 Cumberland (Tenn.).
