CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville softball team just couldn't find a way to score a No. 12 Campbellsville on Saturday, losing 3-0 and 7-0 to the Tigers while stranding 15 runners on base in the two games combined.
Getting hits wasn't the issue as the Bears (13-13, 5-9 MSC) were better in that category in game one 6-3 and kept even with Campbellsville (22-5, 13-1 MSC) for five hits each in game two. But the Tigers' opening starter Victoria Decker and game two's Neely Quint got outs when it mattered to log a pair of shutout, complete-game wins.
Campbellsville led 2-0 after the first inning in game one and it stayed that way until the fifth inning when Brianna Scott lifted a home run to left centerfield. The Tigers scored one run in the first inning of game two before adding two in the fourth and four big scores in the fifth.
Haley Szpila was the catalyst for the four-run frame, belting a three-run homer with just one out to put the Tigers up by seven late in the game.
UPIKE started Lauren Barnes in game one who allowed three runs on three hits with just one strikeout and two walks in 4 1/3 innings. Sydney Morris took the loss in game two after scattering four hits for four runs with five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings as well.
Centerfielder Brandi Jo Howard paced the Bears at the plate in the 3-0 loss, picking up two hits, while both left fielder Kayla Brown and shortstop Hollie Hinkle tallied two hits in game two.
The Bears return to action at 3 p.m. ET on Tuesday against Shawnee State (Ohio) at Paul Butcher Field.Â
