Volleyball Wins Both Matches of Saturday Tri-Match

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville volleyball team used Saturday afternoon to add a pair of wins to its resume, topping Bluefield State (W. Va.) 3-1 and Johnson (Tenn.) 3-0 at UPIKE Gym.

With the wins, the Bears improve to an even 9-9 overall leading into a matchup with 16th-ranked Georgetown at home on Tuesday.

NCAA Div. II Bluefield State gave the biggest challenge, winning the third set 25-23 to avoid being swept. UPIKE came alive in the fourth frame for a 25-17 win to put the match away.

Connor Cook and Sydney Hall paced the offense with 12 and 10 kills, respectively, while Hall also sent back a match-best five blocks. Kaitlyn Welsh, who had eight kills, was the dig leader with 12, followed by libero Rachel Murphy with 10.

The match against Johnson was dominated by the Bears, registering set scores of 25-10, 25-6 and 25-7. UPIKE hit a season-high .469 as a team with Hall and Welsh leading the team with six kills each, both at a .500 clip.

Mikayla Frye paced the Bears at the net with two solo blocks and Murphy finished as the digs leader with eight.

Savanna Zakman tallied 33 assists against Bluefield State and added 14 more against Johnson.
