SWEEP! Men’s and Women’s Bowling Open Season in Style

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- The opening weekend of bowling season for the University of Pikeville men and women is in the books and both programs are coming back from the Green River Classic, hosted by Campbellsville, it style with first-place finishes.

UPIKE's men topped a group of 13 teams with a total pin fall of 7,448, while the women finished first out of 12 with 7,016 pins. The Bears were the only teams on the day to pass the 7,000 pin mark.

On the men's side, it was Zach Fylling leading the charge, rolling down 1,030 pins as he was one of six, and the only UPIKE bowler, to break 1,000. Fylling finished fourth overall and was backed up on the team by Josh Encarnacion in ninth place (984), Derek Perkins in 11th (970) and Matt Cleary in 30th place with a total score of 884.

Perkins had the highest single-game score of the tournament for the Bears with a 237 in his third game.

For the women, KT Simpson was the leader and the overall individual champion after tallying 1,110 pins. Simpson was more than 100 pins better than her nearest competition. Also high on the leaderboard for the Bears was Shelby Fromm in fifth place (964), Fallon Tallman finished 39th (735) and Jenna Coldiron was 44th (706).

While UPIKE was on top of both fields, Martin Methodist and Lindenwood-Belleville rounded out the men's top three and Campbellsville and Lindenwood-Belleville were the next in line for the women.

UPIKE's domination didn't end in the varsity competition as its men's and women's junior-varsity teams also swept their respective titles. Tyler Craft led the men with 936 pins and Tori Doyle collected 910 pins to lead the women. Doyle was also ninth on the overall leaderboard that included varsity competitors as well.

For Mid-South Conference purposes, the UPIKE men are 11-0 and women improve to 10-0 on the season, earning one point for every conference team defeated.

Up next for both programs is the Southern Kentucky Classic on Oct. 3-4 in Bowling Green, Ky.
