PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Shots off the crossbar and post were just inches off the mark as the University of Pikeville men's soccer team was shut out by Kentucky Christian 4-0 on Tuesday, despite outshooting the Knights 25-9.
Logan Alexander and Hayden McLeod took six shots each to lead UPIKE, including four that were on goal by Alexander. Four different Knights scored goals and three of them took two shots each to pace the team.
Despite the Bears tallying a 15-4 shot advantage in the first half, all of the chances didn't add up to goals. Instead, the Knights made a lot of a little, putting all four of their attempts on target, resulting in goals in the 17th and 29th minutes.
The first came off a free kick as Dallas Coning booted the ball on the ground, skipping past the outstretched hand of UPIKE keeper Jorge Mejia. Twelve minutes later, the Knights added some insurance as Seth Bolin played a through ball to Ryan Walker in stride for the one-touch finish.
Neither team could find the back of the net for the first 40 minutes of the second half until Kentucky Christian picked up a pair of late goals.
Stone Cruthers netted the first after receiving a long goal kick and taking the ball into the box on his own. A defensive miscue by UPIKE led to the second as a blocked pass landed right next to the feet of Abraham Mendoza who immediately kicked in the fourth goal.
Mejia scooped up three saves in a full 90 minutes in goal for UPIKE, while KCU's Luke Porter made nine stops without allowing a goal before coming out for the final five minutes of the game.
