Football Notebook: UPIKE at No. 17 Georgetown

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville football team is set to wrap up the regular season at 1:30 p.m. ET on Saturday with a trip to 17th-ranked Georgetown in Toyota Stadium.

The game is being shown live through the Georgetown Stretch Internet Streaming Portal, while it can also be heard on Z1075 FM in Pikeville and live stats are available on DakStats.

·        For the second straight season UPIKE will meet Georgetown in the regular-season finale with a share of the Mid-South Conference Eastv Division Championship up for grabs. UPIKE has twice finished second in the MSC in 2004 and 2005, but has been without a conference title since starting the program in 2001. Last season the Bears were in position to earn a title as well, but lost 22-0 to the Tigers at home. To complete the task on Saturday, the program will have to tally another first, being a win against Georgetown. In the 15-year history of the series, Pikeville is 0-15.

·        With a win against Georgetown, the Bears and Tigers would share the MSC East crown with identical 5-1 divisional records. The Bears would receive the automatic bid to the playoffs based off the head-to-head advantage, but would likely be halted from advancing due to the NAIA's requirement of being ranked in the top-20 of the coaches' poll to compete for a national title. Still, no matter the outcome there, history is at the fingertips of this UPIKE team.

·        UPIKE's pass defense is making waves around the NAIA. Going into the trip to Georgetown, the Bears rank fourth nationally in pass defense, allowing just 142.9 yards per game. The whole defensive unit has played a role, but junior corner Romon Morris has stood out with four interceptions, which ranks 19th nationally, and his 1.3 passes defended per game, which is the 17th best mark in the NAIA. If UPIKE can hold Georgetown to less than 139 passing yards, it will break the program's season record for passing yards allowed in a season.

·        Georgetown, after losing two straight, bounced back last week with a 31-7 thumping of Cumberlands at home. The win kept the Tigers in the top 20 at No. 17, but a loss to UPIKE on its home field could put that position in jeapordy. With a loss to UPIKE, the Tigers would be at the will of the coaches' poll to see if it would miss the NAIA playoffs for a second straight season.

·        Jack Hopkins putting together a strong finish to his senior campaign and moving up the record books. The Maryland native currently ranks ninth in program history with 182 tackles, most recently passing Sean McKinley with 179. Hopkins is ninth all time in solo stops with 117.

·        Romon Morris is currently tied for fifth in program history with seven career interceptions. He's wreaked havoc on opposing quarterbacks, breaking up 17 passes in his career, which is tied for fourth best in UPIKE history. Larry Forester, who played from 2001-04, holds the record with 24. Led by Morris, the UPIKE defense ranks fourth nationally patrolling the backfield.

·        Notable players on offense making a mark on the record books include Jamar Kirksey and his 1,152 career rushing yards which rank seventh and his 12 touchdowns, which are also the seventh most for the Bears. Austin Pray is 10th all time with 48 receptions. Kirksey can pass Dan Wideman for sixth on the rushing list with 153 yards. Punter Damir Karapandzic is the record holder for punts with 171 and extra-points made with 100.
