Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Glenville State

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Second baseman Erik Manning collected three hits, including a pair of doubles, to help the University of Pikeville baseball team to a split with Glenville State on Saturday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.

The Bears lost 4-3 in game one before claiming a 5-3 win in the nightcap behind a four-run effort in the sixth inning while reliever Logan Sales kept the Pioneers' bats at bay to claim his first win of the season in just one inning of work. A.J. Carkner picked up his first save after striking out two batters in the seventh.

Despite outhitting Glenville State 11-7 in the opener, UPIKE stranded 12 on base and found itself in a 4-0 hole heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Bears attempted a rally with three runs before recording their first out, but after a pitching chance, the comeback ended as UPIKE flew out twice and had the tying run forced out at home on a fielder's choice.

In game two, the comeback worked as Glenville State saw its 3-1 lead disappear in the sixth inning on four runs by UPIKE on three hits. Catcher Justin Beatty drove in the winning run with a two-RBI single to score Daniel Sterenberg from third.

It was Beatty's only at bat of the game as he was pinch hitting in what would be UPIKE's final half inning at the plate. Jay Vincent also hustled home from second on the hit to add some insurance.
