BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville softball team was in the hunt for a split at Union on Tuesday, but a rain storm in the area forced play to be suspended in game two, meaning the Bears will have to wait for a reschedule to decide the outcome.
In the opener, Union (8-4) grabbed a 3-0 win as Megan Baldwin was dominant in the circle, scattering four hits without allowing a run with seven strikeouts in seven innings.
Lindsay Floyd took the loss for UPIKE (3-4) after allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts in six innings.
The Bears had scored early and often in game two, taking a 5-0 lead into the top of the third inning. But a rain storm took over the region, forcing the umpires to suspend play. The schools will attempt to resume play where they left off in the coming weeks.
The game's first run, which would end up being enough for the win, was driven in for Union in the first innings on a groundout by Bridget Bass.
Union added two more runs in the bottom of the second as Jennifer Bazlyak started the rally with a single, plating Kayla Frazier. Bass followed that up with an RBI single of her own, bringing home Bazlyak.
Floyd shut out the Bulldogs over the next four innings, but the runs never came for UPIKE which was outhit 8-4 for the game.
