Softball Comes up Short against Rio Grande

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Runs were hard to come by for the University of Pikeville softball team as it was outhit by Rio Grande (Ohio) 23-8 on Wednesday on its way to an 11-0 loss in five innings and 7-1 loss at Paul Butcher Field.

Logan Cline had the best showing at the plate for the Bears (6-9) with three combined hits, all going for a double.

 

Rio Grande 11, UPIKE 0 (5 inn.)

Kelsey Conkey got the win for Rio Grande (12-4) in the opener after throwing four shutout innings. She struck out three batters, didn't issue a walk and scattered just two hits.

Lindsay Floyd took the loss in the circle after allowing 11 runs in five innings with a walk and two strikeouts.

The Redstorm were never threatened after getting hot for six runs in the second inning with the help of a solo home run by Ariel Roder and three singles.

 

Rio Grande 7, UPIKE 1

Despite Logan Cline's two doubles, the Bears couldn't string enough hits together to stay in the game with Rio Grande in the 7-1 loss.

Jenna Jones got the win for the Redstorm after allowing just one run in four innings despite scattering six hits. Mallory Powell closed out the final three frames without allowing a hit and striking out three batters.

Gabby Gregg, Tayler Arndt and Roder combined for seven hits and two RBIs for Rio Grande which also got some help from the Bear defense that committed seven errors.

Alexandra Quill went all seven innings for UPIKE in the circle, but ran into trouble midway through the game, allowing seven runs, just two earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts.

The third inning was enough to earn the win for Rio as it scored three runs on two doubles and an RBI single by Kim Rollins before adding two more runs in the fourth.

UPIKE scored its lone run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Hollie Hinkle.
