Baseball Keeps Winning in MSC, Tops Cumberland 9-6

LEBANON, Tenn. -- For the first time in two seasons, the University of Pikeville baseball team has strung together back-to-back Mid-South Conference wins after topping Cumberland (Tenn.) 9-6 on the road on Friday.

The Bears move to 12-9 overall and an even 2-2 in the MSC after topping Lindsey Wilson in its previous outing. Cumberland, which won a national title in 2014, drops to 16-12 overall and 2-2 in the league as well.

UPIKE's win snapped a three-game winning streak for the Phoenix. The teams will play the final two games of the weekend series at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday.

With the help of a Jacob DiThomas solo home run, the Bears were tied with Cumberland 5-5 through four innings.

Anthony Roberts' solo blast down the left-field line fifth gave the Bears a 6-5 edge, but Jarrett Plunkett was there with the answer, adding a two-out shot to left in the sixth to tie things back up.

Connor Osborne's pinch-hit, two-run single in the eighth ended up putting UPIKE ahead for good, while an insurance run also scored in the ninth on a wild pitch.

Dalton Dahley (3-3) evened his season record for the Bears, allowing six runs on seven hits in 7 2/3 innings. He walked three batters, but also struck out four. Logan Sales claimed his third save with 1 1/3 of shutout pitching.

Stephen Fischer (6-1) took his first loss of 2016 after giving up eight runs on 11 hits in seven innings.

Five Bears registered two hits each with Josh Bailey, Erik Manning and Roberts being among those that also drove in a run.

Run came early and often when this one started with UPIKE taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on singles from Bailey, Manning and Jay Vincent. Not wanting to be outdone, Cumberland fired back with four runs in the bottom of the frame, including a leadoff homer from Nick McGrew.

The Phoenix added a run to their lead in the third on a sacrifice fly, but DiThomas was there to even the score with his two-run shot.
