LEBANON, Tenn. -- For the first time since 2007, the University of Pikeville baseball team put together a series sweep in Mid-South Conference play, beating Cumberland 8-4 and 10-0 during a Saturday doubleheader.
UPIKE (14-9, 4-2 MSC) opened the three-game series with a 9-6 win on Friday. The last time the Bears recorded a conference sweep was against West Virginia Tech from March 30-April 1, 2007.
The Bears used two big innings in the opener and a six-run fourth in the nightcap to stay on the winning side.
UPIKE opened the day hot and never slowed down, scoring four runs in the first inning played, then three more in the ninth frame of game one. It was just 1-0 in game two before the Bears got things rolling with the six-run fourth.
Four Cumberland (16-14, 2-4 MSC) pitchers combined to allow 25 hits and issue seven walks on the day.
Justin Beatty led UPIKE at the plate in game one, driving in two of the Bears' four runs in the first inning before clearing the bases with a double in the ninth to hold off Cumberland which had gotten within a run at 5-4. UPIKE tallied 14 hits total, three of which belonged to Josh Bailey.
Curtis Hoppe (4-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Bryce Carden (4-1) picked up the win for the Bears, scattering five hits for three runs in 5 1/3 innings, while Logan Sales posted his fourth save with three shutout innings.
Travis Haen's two-run single was part of the six-run fourth in the second game, with Bailey, Beatty and Connor Osborne also plating runs with hits in the frame.
Haen posted three hits and drove in three runs, while Jacob DiThomas added two hits and scored four times in the 10-0 victory.
Aaron Hedgecock (2-0) tossed seven shutout innings to earn the win, allowing just two hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. It was just the second time all season that the Phoenix had been shut out.
