Softball Sweeps Cumberlands on the Road

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville softball team snapped a five-game losing streak and picked up its second and third Mid-South Conference wins of the season with a pair of 8-2 and 7-2 decisisons at Cumberlands on Tuesday.

UPIKE moves to 9-16 overall and 3-7 in MSC play, while Cumberlands drops to 15-14 overall and 3-9 in league play.

Jillian Bohnert had the hot bat in the opener with a home run on her two hits, followed by Mackenzie Summers picking up the big swing in game two with a two-run home run in the fifth inning.

UPIKE 8, Cumberlands 2

The Bears scored three runs in the seventh inning to put the final stamp on an 8-2 win over the Patriots.

Leading 5-2 heading into the final frame, UPIKE added RBI singles from Cassandra Javier and Mackenzie Summers, along with Lindsay Floyd coming home from third on a wild pitch to add some insurance to the decision.

Bohnert paced UPIKE going a perfect 2 for 2 with a home run in the second inning and single in the third.

Floyd not only scored a late run, she also recorded the win in the circle after allowing just two runs on nine hits with a strikeout and a walk.

Mindy Jo Britt took the loss for Cumberlands after giving up eight runs and walking four batters.

Bohnert opened up the scoring with her second-inning solo shot and UPIKE never trailed again.

UPIKE 7, Cumberlands 4

Trailing 7-2 in the final inning, Cumberlands threatened with a bases-loaded rally but could only come up with two runs in a 7-4 loss in game two.

Cumberlands outhit UPIKE12-9, but failed to capitalize, stranding 10 runners on base.

Mackenzie Summers racked up a pair of RBIs with one swing of the bat, homering in the fifth inning to turn a 2-1 deficit into a one-run lead for the Bears.

Alexandra Quill scattered 12 hits for four runs with four strikeouts to claim the complete-game win. Taryn Sigl took the loss after allowing seven runs in seven innings with four strikeouts.

Cumberlands grabbed an early 2-0 lead after tallying single runs in the first and second innings before Summers gave UPIKE the lead for good with her fifth-inning blast.

The 3-2 lead quickly went to 7-2 after the Bears struck for four more runs in the sixth inning with the help of a three-run double by Floyd.
