Softball Takes Two Hard-Fought Road Losses at Bluefield

BLUEFIELD, Va. -- For just the second time this season the University of Pikeville softball team was swept in a doubleheader, losing 5-4 and 1-0 on the road at Bluefield on Wednesday.

The Bears drop to 5-6 overall and will take a bit of a break after a busy start to the week. Next up on the schedule is a trip to Tennessee Wesleyan at 1:30 p.m. ET on Sunday. The Rams improve to 7-9 on the season with the wins.

Bluefield 5, UPIKE 4

UPIKE took a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning of game one before Bluefield took advantage of a miscue in the field and some timely hitting to score five go-ahead runs en route to the 5-4 win.

Destiny Molden collected three hits, scoring the game's first run with a home run in the third inning along with singles in the first and fifth innings. Courtney Morgan joined her with multiple hits, tallying two and driving in a pair of runs with a double.

Baily Garin got the win in the circle in just two innings of relief, allowing just a single hit. Brienna Sparks tallied a save by keeping UPIKE's bats quiet in the top of the seventh.

Bluefield's sixth-inning push was completed by a two-run error, a sacrifice fly by Kristen Murphy, an RBI single by Morgan Sawyers and a two-run triple from Morgan Stephens.

Bluefield 1, UPIKE 0

Alexandra Quill and the UPIKE defense were exceptional in game two, but the run support never came in a 1-0 eight-inning loss.

Quill and the Bears worked through as many as 11 difficult moments as she lasted 7 1/3 innings in the circle, allowing just the one run on eight hits with three strikeouts.

The problem was Bluefield's Sparks. After getting some momentum with the game-one save, she went on to allow just one hit in eight innings with eight strikeouts.

After neither team could score in regulation, Bluefield finally pushed something across in the bottom of the eighth as Michaela Carter hit an RBI single, one of her two hits on the day.
