PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville men's tennis team tallied its first ranked win of the season, getting past No. 17 Campbellsville 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at the Bob Amos Complex.
With the win, the Bears improve to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in Mid-South Conference play, while the Tigers drop to 9-6 overall and 4-2 in league play.
UPIKE started out strong with a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Jan Kappes and Enzo Douillac kicked things off with an 8-6 win over Vladyslav Ladygin and Zach Baulch, followed by Eric Bernabue and Diego Reboredo winning by the same score at the No. 2 seed over Adrian Sabrojo and Victor Ahlbeck.
Only the Bears' third-seeded duo of Pablo Casas and Fernando Fernandez lost, falling 8-4 to Alejandro Soriano and Eduardo Mendoza.
Campbellsville made things interesting in singles, winning two of the first three matches to finish. With the score knotted up at 3-3 overall, Ahlbeck gave the Tigers a one-point lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Fernandez at the No. 4 seed.
Fifth-seeded Juan Reyes quickly evened things back up for UPIKE though with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Johan Fuzellier, setting up No. 6-seed singles as the deciding matchup.
Reboredo had little trouble in that one for the Bears, topping Mendoza 6-1, 6-4 to edge Campbellsville 5-4 overall.
