Softball Splits with Cumberlands Behind Pineda’s Blast

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Breana Pineda hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning of game one to help the University of Pikeville softball team to a 10-5 win over Cumberlands on Tuesday. The Patriots responded in the nightcap with a 7-4 win as the Bears committed six errors.

UPIKE outhit Cumberlands 25-16 on the day, but kept itself from completing a sweep by committing a combined eight errors while the Patriots fumbled just one.

The Patriots lost a lead twice in game one on home runs. First they led 2-0 in the bottom of the third when Logan Cline went deep to centerfield, scoring Destitny Molden to tie the score. After the Bears added two more runs the next inning on a Pineda triple, Cumberlands battled back up by one with a three-run fifth.

Cumberlands hit three doubles in the frame, scoring on two of them, and reaching home safely on a squeeze bunt that looked like an out before being bobbled on the exchange at the plate.

But the 5-4 lead didn't last long as Pineda, who was a stat-sheet stuffer in the game, added a two-run homer to center that put the Bears up for good. They added four more runs on three hits as insurance in the sixth as Alexandra Quill took care of business in the circle over the final 2 2/3 innings.

Game two saw the Bears fare better at the plate, with 10 hits to seven, but issues in the field turned a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning to a 7-4 deficit in the fifth as the Patriots scored four runs on one hit and three errors.

The frame started with leadoff batter Kaylee James bunting for a single, then UPIKE couldn't complete a force out at second in the next at bat as a wild throw travel to the outfield, allowing the first run to score. The next two runs also scored on errors, including an errant throw at to home and a wild throw to first before adding a fourth run on a groundout to the pitcher.

UPIKE never responded after surrendering the lead as neither team scored again. Taryn Sigl held on for the win in the circle, scattering 10 hits for four runs with eight strikeouts and five walks.
