Softball Trades Lopsided Wins with Cumberland on Friday

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville softball team and Cumberland (Tenn.) traded lopsided run-rule wins on Friday with the Bears winning the opener 9-1 in five innings, followed by the Phoenix securing the split with a 10-2 win in five innings in the nightcap.

The Mid-South Conference series wraps up with two more games on Saturday starting at Noon ET as UPIKE will honor its seniors between games.

UPIKE 9, Cumberland 1 (5 inn.)

UPIKE (16-25, 10-16 MSC) scored in every inning of the opener on its way to a 9-1 win in a run-rule five innings.

UPIKE scored its first two runs without a hit in the first inning as a hit batter and a fielder's choice brought them home. A two-run double by Courtney Morgan in the second inning helped UPIKE to an early 4-0 lead.

Mackenzie Summers finished with two hits in the game, including a two-run home run in the third to make it six unanswered runs.

The one run scored on a solo blast by Breana Pineda in the fourth was UPIKE's lowest scoring inning. They got back to multiple runs in the fifth as Jordan Gentry kicked things off with an RBI double, followed by an RBI single from Morgan.

Lindsay Floyd earned the win in the circle after scattering four hits for one run with one strikeout in five innings. For Cumberland (13-29, 9-17), Crystal Bryant took the loss after allowing nine runs on nine hits with five strikeouts in 4 1/3 frames.

Cumberland 10, UPIKE 2 (5 inn.)

Cumberland outhit the Bears 12-4 in game two, including a 3-for-3 showing by Madison Gonzalez and 2-for-3 performance  by Kassydi Montgomery with a home run, to win game two 10-2 in five innings.

After falling behind 4-0 in the first three innings, Jordan Gentry racked up two RBIs on a home run to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third. Gentry entered the day with nine hits, all singles, but hit a double in the opener and took a ball out of the park in game two.

But UPIKE failed to score again as Cumberland put up a six spot in the fourth on six hits, including Montgomery''s three-run shot over the fence in left field, to bring the game to an early close.

Nicole Pratt got the win for Cumberland after allowing just two runs over three innings with three strikeouts and no walks.

Alexandra Quill took the loss after scattering 11 hits for nine runs with no strikeouts and three walks.
