BEREA, Ky. -- Josh Bailey allowed just two runs over six innings and Mike Peluffo scored three runs on three hits to lift the University of Pikeville baseball team over Berea 11-2 in a non-conference road trip on Wednesday.
UPIKE (21-17) outhit Berea (10-17) 13-7 and played error free in the field. The Bears led just 3-2 after the second inning but went on to outscore the Mountaineers 8-0 the rest of the way.
Peluffo led all batters with a 3-for-4 performance at the dish, adding a double, RBI and drawing a walk. Jacob DiThomas, Travis Haen and Bailey all added two hits each at the top of the order, while catcher Cody Stinnett also tallied a pair of hits from the eight spot in the lineup.
Bailey arguably got the most done with his hits, driving in four runs with a double and single while also drawing a walk and stealing a base. On the mound, Bailey scattered five hits and struck out four batters with two walks. A.J. Carkner picked up a three-inning save, allowing just two hits and striking out four as well.
Nate Metz took the loss for Berea after allowing three runs on four hits in two innings of work. Second baseman Ryan Blevens was his biggest help at the plate, collecting two hits, including a two-RBI single in the second inning and later on adding a triple.
UPIKE's three runs in the top of the second inning ended up being enough to hold on for the win as Stinnett got things started driving in a run on a groundout, followed by Haen plating two runs with a base hit. Bailey helped the Bears break things open in the fourth with a three-run double to take a 6-2 lead.
