Baseball Splits with No. 19 Campbellsville on Saturday

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville baseball team avoided a sweep against No. 19 Campbellsville with a 4-0 shutout win in the opener on Saturday before losing 5-2 in the nightcap.

UPIKE moves to 22-19 overall and 10-8 in Mid-South Conference play, while Campbellsville is 30-12 overall and 12-6 in league play.

Josh Bailey went 2-4 and hit a home run as UPIKE put together a 4-0 win over Campbellsville in game one.

Bailey's homer came in the fourth inning before singling in the eighth inning.

Bryce Carden worked out of five tough situations for the Bears on his way to the win, scattering five hits without allowing a run with four strikeouts and seven walks.

Mario Morales took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts as A.J. Carkner put away the final nine outs to record the three-inning save.

UPIKE went up for good in the fourth inning, scoring two runs on a solo blast by Bailey and an RBI single by Jacob DiThomas.

 

Campbellsville 5, UPIKE 2

A tight game was decided in the seventh inning as Campbellsville broke open a 2-2 tie with three runs in the frame.

Nick Morehead got the win for Campbellsville after allowing just two runs over six innings with five strikeouts.

Campbellsville was sparked by Nestor Linares and Cody Erickson, who teamed up for five hits and three RBIs.

Aaron Hedgecock took the loss after scattering seven hits for four runs with four strikeouts in six innings.

Campbellsville's Jake Pannunzio put away the final three outs to record the save after coming in with a 5-2 lead.

Bailey helped the Bears to a 1-0 lead in the first with a double before eventually coming home an Justin Beatty's RBI single.

The Tigers led 2-1 in the top of the fourth before DiThomas drew a walk then came home on a single to center by Mike Peluffo that was mishandled in the outfield, allowing Peluffo to make it all the way to third.

After two scoreless innings, Campbellsville went up for good in the top of the seventh on a two-run homer by Nestor Linares and RBI double by Cody Erickson to take a 5-2 lead. UPIKE wasn't able to tally any hits in the bottom of the inning.
