HAMILTON, Ohio -- In a game with plenty of offense, the University of Pikeville came out on top, rallying past Miami-Hamilton 13-8 on the road on Wednesday.
The Harriers were a good mid-week challenge, coming into the game with 33 wins on the season, but the Bears were able to outhit them 18-14 with seven batters tallying two or more hits to improve to 23-19 overall.
UPIKE's 23 wins are the most for the program since 2001 when the Bears won 28 games.
Four Bears had three hits, including Daniel Sterenberg, Ryne Smith, Cody Stinnett and Eric Tucker. Stinnett drove in three runs, while the other three drove in two runs each. While Mike Peluffo didn't register a hit in three official at-bats, he drove in three runs on two sacrifice flies and a groundout.
Josh Bailey picked up the win on the mount to move to 4-3 on the season after scattering six hits for three runs with seven strikeouts in five innings. A.J. Carkner came on in the eighth inning to earn his eighth save of the season.
UPIKE was enjoying a 9-4 lead heading into the eighth inning when Miami-Hamilton got to the bullpen for three runs to make it a two-score game. But Carkner got things settled down on the mound and UPIKE responded with four runs of its own in the ninth to help hold off the surging Harriers.
