MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Taking on its second NAIA top-10 opponent in a row, the University of Pikeville men's tennis team fell at second-ranked Auburn-Montgomery 7-2 on Sunday at the AUM Tennis Center.
The Bears, who also lost at No. 7 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) on Friday by the same score, drop to 10-4 overall, while the Warhawks move to 15-4. UPIKE was a bit shorthanded as Juan Reyes, a key singles and doubles player, was unavailable for the match.
One of UPIKE's two wins on the day came early on in doubles play as the second-seeded duo of Jan Kappes and Enzo Douillac topped Matias Destefanis and Santiago Vegila 9-8. The other two matches were tightly contested as well, most notably Pablo Casas and Fernando Fernandez losing 9-7 to Francisco Mendieta and Luis Vivas at the No. 3 seed.
UPIKE's lone win in the singles portion came from Douillac who got past Destefanis 6-2, 6-3 at the second seed.
Third-seeded Casas nearly added another UPIKE victory before losing 7-5, 4-6, 10-4 to Vincent Dubosclard.
Next up for the Bears is the Mid-South Conference Tournament where they earned the No. 3 seed and will face sixth-seeded Georgetown (Ky.) in the first round at 10 a.m. ET on Thursday at Kereiakes Park in Bowling Green, Ky.
