Game Recap: Baseball |

And This Series Belongs to the Bears, Baseball Takes Georgetown 2-1

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- With three Mid-South Conference series left, the University of Pikeville baseball team is in first place in the league standings after taking a series from Georgetown with a Saturday split, losing 21-5 in the opener before winning 9-3 in the nightcap.

Combined with a 12-2 run-rule win on Friday, the Bears took two out of three from Georgetown, giving them their third straight MSC series win.

Overall, UPIKE moves to 18-13 with an 8-4 mark against MSC teams, while the Tigers are now 21-19 overall and 5-7 in league play.

Georgetown 21, UPIKE 5

After UPIKE went on a late 4-0 rally to get within six of Georgetown at 11-5, the Tigers racked up 10 runs in the ninth inning to slam the door shut on a 21-5 win in the opener.

Josh Bailey collected two extra-base hits, including a double in the first inning, singled in the sixth and tripled in the seventh, but UPIKE's six errors and being outhit 15-10 overall were too much to overcome.

Tommy McCormick pitched three solid innings of no-hit, shutout relief for the Bears while they attempted their late rally before Georgetown heated back up late.

Shawn Kennedy II allowed five runs over six innings, but still recorded the win on the mound as he scattered eight hits with five strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Bryce Carden took his second loss of the season after allowing seven runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings, although just one of the runs was earned.

The first inning was much difference than the eventual outcome as the Bears quickly tied things up at 1-1 on a groundout by Justin Beatty.

But Georgetown never trailed again after scoring six runs in the third on a two-run double by Emanuel Sanchez-Rosario, an error, and a two-run single by Robert Longtree.

UPIKE 9, Georgetown 3

After exploding for six runs in the sixth inning, UPIKE beat Georgetown 9-3 in the nightcap on Saturday.

The frame opened with a 3-3 tie and the late rally started with a bases-loaded walk by Beatty, followed by a two-run single from Anthony Roberts and a roped RBI triple from Erik Manning, who later scored himself on a wild pitch.

Roberts reached base four times for the Bears, scoring one run and driving in two others as he finished 1 for 1 with three walks.

Logan Sales got the win in relief after throwing a shutout sixth and seventh innings with no hits and just one walk allowed.

Michael Syrett took the loss after just 3 1/3 innings of relief. He walked three batters, struck out one and allowed three runs.

Georgetown led 3-0 heading into the third inning when Beatty hit an RBI single to center, Bailey came home on a wild pitch and Travis Haen tied things up after scoring on Jacob DiThomas' fielder's choice hit.
