PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- With offensive chances scarce and a top-25 opponent in town, the University of Pikeville men's soccer team was handed a 7-0 loss at the Hambley Athletic Complex on Monday.
The Phoenix outshot the Bears 32-4 overall, including a 20-0 lead in shots on goal. Daniel Williams led the way for Cumberland, netting a hat trick of three goals on a game-high seven shots. Elliott Goodwin and Williams had two goals each in the first half, helping the Phoenix to a 5-0 lead at halftime.
Goodwin struck first in the fifth minute and added his second goal four minutes later. After a brief scoreless break, Williams added the third and fourth goals in the 25th and 27th minutes.
Four different Bears attempted shots, but none were on target. Anibal Navarro collected seven saves for UPIKE in the first half and Jorge Meija took over for the final 45 minutes, grabbing six saves off the bench.
Bennet Strutz tallied the shutout win in goal for Cumberland without having to make a save. His team led the game in corner kicks 5-0 and had a 9-2 lead in offside calls.
