PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Seventh-ranked Campbellsville outshot the 23rd-ranked University of Pikeville women's basketball team 50-41 percent in the second half to push ahead for a 74-67 win on Saturday.
The Tigers (15-2, 2-1 MSC) trailed by as many as eight points in the first half, but the Bears cooled down from the field as they heated up, allowing Campbellsville to lead by 10 with four minutes to play. UPIKE clawed as close as five points twice the rest of the way, including at 72-67 on a Kelah Eldridge three with 14 seconds left.
Devin Conley and Emily Baker paced the Bears (12-5, 2-2 MSC) with 12 points each, while Adison Corder chipped in with nine and Eldridge had seven. Elisabeth Latham grabbed a team-best five rebounds as they were outrebounded 41-25 for the game.
That led to a 14-5 advantage for Campbellsville in second-chance points as it led 10-4 on the offensive glass. UPIKE's bench outscored the Tigers' 33-6, but Campbellsville connected on 22 of 26 free throws, compared to 10 of 11 for the Bears to make the difference.
HOW IT WENT DOWN
After watching the Tigers rattle off the first five points of the game, UPIKE clamped down on defense and went on a quick 5-1 run to tie things up that included buckets from Kandice Porter and Kelah Eldridge and two freebies from Jamie Castle.
UPIKE went on to lead by as many as eight points in the opening quarter at 20-12 on a Brianna Burbridge layup at the 22-second mark.
The lead was still seven with 5:12 left before halftime, but Campbellsville went on a 9-2 spurt over the next three minutes to tie things up. A costly turnover in the final seconds gave the Bears the final basket of the half on an Elisabeth Latham layup to lead 33-31.
UPIKE's lead lasted a little over two minutes in the second half as Jordan Doram made back-to-back baskets to put Campbellsville in front 37-36. A 9-4 run briefly put the Bears back up by four at 47-43, but the Tigers came right back with a 7-2 run of their own to go in front 50-49 and they never trailed again.
Campbellsville scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to build an eight-point lead. Kandice Porter and Eldridge answered with back-to-back layups to cut the deficit in half, but the Tigers took control for good with a 6-0 run that included four points from the free-throw line.
