LEBANON, Tenn -- Brian McNamara scored a goal in each half to lead 24th-ranked Cumberland to a 5-0 win over the University of Pikeville men's soccer team on Saturday.
The teams played scoreless soccer for 20 minutes before Tosin Abudiore finished a one-on-one battle from 15-yards out. While that one goal ended up being enough for the game winner, McNamara added his first goal before halftime in the 38th minute from short distance into the left side of the net.
After leading 2-0 at the break, Cumberland (11-2-1, 4-1-1 MSC) put even more goals on the board in the second half, adding three in the 69th, 74th and 84th minutes. Again, UPIKE (2-11-1, 0-6 MSC) kept the Phoenix quiet for more than 20 minutes to start a half before Sondre Risa made it 3-0 with header off a free kick.
Dylan Schwartz's goal in the 74th came off a corner kick and McNamara closed out the scoring off a cross into the box from Alex West.
Cumberland led the game in shots 21-2 overall and 15-2 in shots put on target. Corner kicks went its way as well at 6-1.
Eric Bernabeu and Aaron Aven tallied the shots for UPIKE and goalkeeper Anival Navarro collected nine saves in a full 90 minutes. For the Phoenix, Daniel Williams led them with seven shots and keeper Bennet Strutz finished with two saves in a complete game as well.
