PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Against Wright State Lake, it seemed like Jayvian Delacruz was shooting into an ocean, connecting on 12 of 14 shots to finish with a game-high 29 points and lead eighth-ranked University of Pikeville to a 115-58 win on Tuesday.
UPIKE, which improves to a perfect 12-0 and jumped six spots in the NAIA top-25 poll just before tip-off, posted a 70-32 scoring advantage in the paint and outscored Lake's bench 20-8.
Delacruz, who also went 3 for 4 from behind the arc, added seven rebounds, an assist, steal and block to his standout night. Darrion Leslie added 15 points and Da'Rell Domineck had a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds. Michael Chambers had a strong outing off the bench with nine points and three assists.
Wright State (2-9) had just one double-digit scorer in Jalen Huff with 10 as it shot just 31.5 percent from the field and only made 3 of 20 3-pointers. It also trailed the Bears on the glass 51-35, leading to a 20-8 discrepancy in second-chance points.
UPIKE didn't have the same problems from the field, hitting at 60.8 percent and making 18 of 26 free throws.
The Bears never trailed in the game, but they didn't exactly come out hitting on all cylinders. Eight minutes into the action the lead was only three at 18-15. An 8-0 run over the next two minutes seemed to be the spark UPIKE needed as it put them in front by 11, which grew to a 28-point lead at 60-32 on Culbreath's layup just before halftime.
The layup was part of a 9-2 UPIKE run to end the final three minutes of the half.
Wright State never got any closer in the second half, instead trailing by as many as 63 points after a Dylan James jumper in the paint made it 113-50 with 2:23 left.
