Two Double-Doubles Help Women’s Basketball Top Asbury 75-65

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – Jamie Castle hit all four of her 3-point attempts to finish with 20 points and lead the University of Pikeville women's basketball team to a 75-65 win over Asbury on Friday in the Shawnee State Classic.

Three other Bears scored in double figures, including Aundrea Matchen with 14 off the bench, Adison Corder with 13 and Emily Baker adding 10. Matchen and Baker both finished with double-doubles as they claimed 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

Castle not only led the team in scoring, but in assists as well with four. Corder added a career-best five steals and three assists, while Matchen also dished out three dimes.

In a game where both teams shot around 42 percent, the hustle stats mattered as UPIKE outrebounded the Eagles 39-31 and forced 24 turnovers. The Bears (7-5) had their share as well with 19 giveaways, but making four extra 3s and a 19-11 lead on the offensive glass made up for it.

Asbury (3-8) got 22 points from Kelsey Johnson and 16 from Shelby McDonald, but she went 6 of 20 from the field to get there. Bailey Brown hit the Eagles only three 3-pointers to finish with 13 points.

Neither team led by more than four points in a back-and-forth opening quarter with UPIKE going on top 12-8 on a Castle 3 before the Eagles clawed back on top 16-12 three minutes later thanks to an 8-0 run. At the end of the frame it was a one-point lead for Asbury.

UPIKE switched things up to man-to-man defense to start the second quarter and instantly got a steal and layup from Hailey Anderson. After the swipe and bucket the Bears never trailed again.

The lead reached double digits at 37-26 on a Corder layup with 2:03 left before halftime before a jumper by Rachel Lee sent the Bears into the break ahead by 16. It ended up being a 17-2 run for UPIKE over the final seven minutes of the first half.

UPIKE kept its foot on the gas in the third quarter and made the first basket of the fourth to take its largest lead of 21 points. The lead was still 21 at 69-48 after a 3 by Corder with 8:01 to play, but Asbury wasn't done trying to chip away at the deficit.

An 11-2 Eagle run over the next three minutes got them within 12, but that's as close as it would get until two freebies by Autumn Herriford in the closing seconds got the game to the final 75-65 score.
