Softball Falls to USC-Beaufort 10-2 and 5-3 on the Road

BEAUFORT, S.C -- In its first true road games of the season, the University of Pikeville softball team came up short against USC-Beaufort 10-2 in seven innings in the opener before falling 5-3 in the nightcap on Saturday.

The Bears drop to 0-4 on the season, while the Land Sharks - who are receiving votes in the NAIA top-25 poll - move to 11-5 overall.

UPIKE was outhit 15-4 in the opener as Lee Griffin, Jillian Bohnert, Logan Cline and Carrier Griffin all logged one hit each. None of the hits went for extra bases.

It was briefly a 2-1 lead for the Bears in the third inning when Bohnert's single drove in two runs, but the Land Sharks fought back with five runs over the next two frames. Leading 6-2, USC-Beaufort put the game away by run-rule in the sixth inning with four more runs.

Kayla Boyle and Carrier Cochran both hit home runs in the win as Boyle finished 3-for-3 at the dish with two RBIs.

Alexandra Quill took the loss in the circle after allowing 10 runs on 13 hits in five innings with one strikeout. Abby Pac grabbed the complete-game win, scattering four hits for two runs with five strikeouts.

UPIKE struck first in game two as Bohnert's first-inning single scored Lee Griffin, but the Land Sharks scored three in the third and another in the fourth to take the lead for good.

Down 4-1, the Bears scored two runs on Kitty Raymond's single to centerfield, but that's as close as they would get as Beaufort added an insurance run in the sixth.

Lee Griffin went 2-for-3 in the loss while also drawing a walk and stealing a base. Raymond, Bohnert and Floyd added the other hits as the Land Sharks outhit them 12-5 overall.

Floyd pitched all six innings to take the loss, allowing five runs with two strikeouts while Naomi Catt scattered five hits for three runs in five innings to earn the win.
