Campbellsville Wins Extra-Inning Thriller Over Baseball 5-4

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- For 13 innings, the University of Pikeville baseball team and Campbellsville passed the lead back-and-forth before the Tigers eventually prevailed 5-4 when Matt Valdez doubled off of A.J. Carkner, driving in the go-ahead run on Friday.

UPIKE fell to 14-10 overall and 1-5 in Mid-South Conference play despite out-hitting Campbellsville 12 to 11. The Tigers improve to 15-10 overall and 4-2 in league play to sit alone in second place.

Campbellsville took an early lead in the second inning when a wild pitch by starter Bryce Carden allowed the runner on third to hustle home. UPIKE would go on to knot the game up at four runs each in the bottom of the ninth frame when Anthony Roberts singled on the first pitch of his at bat to score one.

In between those moments, the Bears had scored three runs in the fourth inning to overcome an early 2-0 deficit. The big inning came from an RBI-single by Luke Hartlage and a run-scoring groundout by Kase Mattingly.

Tiger starter Nick Przybylek threw 8 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and striking out seven. But Malik Evans snuck in for the win in extras after going 4 1/3 innings. A.J. Carkner took the loss for UPIKE after throwing the final 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run, three hits, striking out five and walking one batter.

Carden started the game for the Bears and lasted 6 1/3, surrendering four runs on five hits with two strikeouts.

Justin Beatty, Mattingly and Roberts each collected multiple hits for the Bears as Roberts, Hartlage, Brandon Sewell and Mattingly all drove in a run each.

Clay Valenzuela-Reece paced Campbellsville with three hits while Matt Valdez and Carlos Garmendia added two each.

UPIKE returns to the diamond at 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Ohio Christian in Circleville, Ohio.
