COLUMBIA, Ky. – The University of Pikeville softball team scored two runs in the sixth inning to tie eighth-ranked Lindsey Wilson 2-2 before ultimately falling 3-2 in game one of a Mid-South Conference road trip on Saturday. The Blue Raiders responded in game two with an 8-0 win in five innings.
Hannah Thacker pitched as well as you could hope against the top-10 Blue Raiders, allowing just two runs through six innings with six strikeouts. But her offense went three up, three down in the top of the seventh, allowing LWC to win on a bases-loaded, two-out single by Sydney Fourman.
Lindsey Wilson had taken its 2-0 lead in the fourth inning with two outs as well, scoring first on an Amber Foukes double and again on a double by Bailey Mize.
UPIKE answered in the sixth as Jillian Bohnert scored Jordan Gentry from second on a deep single to left field before Destiny Molden's sacrifice fly tied the game.
Casey Bryan secured the win in the circle for Lindsey Wilson (14-7, 2-0 MSC) after scattering five hits for two runs with 12 strikeouts.
After a scoreless first inning in game two, the Blue Raiders went on to score two runs in each of the next four frames. With the needed eight-run lead for a run-rule win, Lauren Lett continued to shut down the Bears' bats to finish with a three-hit shutout performance with six strikeouts in just five innings.
UPIKE (6-12, 0-2 MSC) used four pitchers in the loss, but Alexandra Quill took the loss after starting the game and allowing four runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Only one of the runs was earned as UPIKE committed three errors in the game.
Two of the Bears' three hits came from Kitty Raymond who went 2 for 2, the other belonged to Lee Griffin. Fourman and Callum Pilgrim both hit home runs for the Blue Raiders in their shortened win.
Gentry, Raymond, Bohnert, Molden and Logan Cline all had one hit each in the opener, while Foukes was the only player in the game to register multiple hits with two for Lindsey Wilson.
The teams will finish the four-game series starting at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
