WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville softball team played Cumberlands to a Mid-South Conference split on Tuesday, losing game one 12-4 in five innings before holding on for a 12-9 win in game two on the road.
UPIKE moves to 7-15 overall and 1-5 in league play, while the Patriots are 10-13 overall and 4-2 in the MSC.
Cumberlands 12, UPIKE 4 (5 inn.)
The Patriots outhit the Bears 11-6 and watched Pikeville commit four errors in the field to put together a run-rule win in five innings. The bulk of the offense came in the second inning when UPIKE overcame a 3-0 deficit with four runs, to only watch Cumberlands respond with six runs in the bottom of the second.
UPIKE failed to score in the next three innings as the Patriots added three runs to their 9-4 lead in the fourth inning to put the game away.
Kitty Raymond continued her solid play of late, leading UPIKE at the plate with two hits and an RBI, while Lee Griffin roped a triple and later scored on her lone hit. Cumberlands' Kaylee James went 3 for 4 as the leadoff, scoring a pair of runs and Morgan Elliston drove in two runs with a home run.
Alexandria Quill took the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits, while Sydney Maynard recorded a complete-game win, scattering six hits for four runs with five strikeouts.
UPIKE 12, Cumberlands 9
UPIKE won a marathon in the finale, outslugging the Patriots 16-15 in a win that wasn't a sure thing until the final out of the bottom of the seventh.
Behind long balls by Jillian Bohnert and Logan Cline, the Bears shot out to a 6-1 lead after two innings, forcing Cumberlands to play catch up the rest of the way. The Patriots got within two at 6-4 with three runs in the fourth before both teams scored two runs each in the next frame.
UPIKE gave itself a 12-6 cushion with four runs between the sixth and seventh innings combined before holding off a Patriots offense that scored three in the seventh before recording the final out.
Lindsay Floyd stayed in for all seven frames in the circle, allowing the nine runs on 15 hits with two strikeouts in the win. Kacy Russell was stuck with the loss after allowing six runs on five hits with two strikeouts in the first 1 2/3 innings.
Cline shined at the dish, reaching safely in all four at bat while adding a double and three RBIs to her earlier mentioned home run. Destiny Molden doubled and drove in a run with her two hits and Lee Griffin went 3 for 5 with a stolen base.
Elliston added another home run on two hits and Kailin Yantz tallied a team-best three hits with a double in the loss.
