Game Recap: Softball |

Goines Lifts Softball to Sweep of Ohio Christian

PIKEVILLE, Ky.Ashley Goines' RBI-single to left field in the eighth inning of game two secured a sweep of Ohio Christian for the University of Pikeville softball team, winning 3-0 in game one and 2-1 in the finale on Wednesday at Paul Butcher Field.

UPIKE moves to 9-15 overall with three straight wins, while Ohio Christian drops to 2-8. Up next for the Bears is a four-game home Mid-South Conference series with No. 6 Campbellsville starting at 2 p.m. ET on Friday.

UPIKE 3, Ohio Christian 0

There wasn't a lot of excitement in the opener as Hannah Skaggs shined in her UPIKE debut, allowing just four hits and striking out nine batters to help the Bears to the shutout. Run support came in singles as the Bears went ahead 1-0 in the second innings before adding runs in the fourth and fifth.

Goines and Lindsay Floyd both hit run-scoring doubles to pace the offense with Floyd tallying a team-best two hits. Lexi Williams took the loss after scattering six hits for three runs with five strikeouts, but also walked six batters and got lucky with UPIKE stranding nine runners on base.

What would end up being enough for the winning run was scored in the second inning on Floyd's one-out double that followed Destiny Molden and Goines drawing walks. Floyd scored in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk and Molden added a run in the fifth on Goines' double.

UPIKE 2, Ohio Christian 1 (8 inn.)

Molden reached on an error and came around to score on Floyd's double in the second inning, then the Trailblazers smashed an equalizer with Caroline Rice's solo home run in the fourth.

After that, it was anyone's game, and it took implanting the international tie breaker in the eighth inning to find a winner.

OCU took to the plate first in extras and loaded the bases with two straight singles, but Hannah Thacker secured three straight outs on a line out, fly out and groundout to preserve the tie. UPIKE brought the game to a close in a hurry as Molden bunted Cline over to third, followed by Goines promptly providing the walk-off single to left field.

Thacker grabbed the win in the circle by allowing just the one run on seven hits with five strikeouts and no walk. OCU starter Whitney Fiedler went the distance as well in the loss, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Kitty Raymond led the Bears at the dish, going 2 for 4, while Lee Griffin added a double.
