PIPPA PASSES, Ky. – The University of Pikeville softball team hit a combined four home runs in a pair of 14-0 and 6-4 wins at Alice Lloyd on Monday afternoon. The opener ended by run rule in the fifth inning, while the Bears had to fold off a four-run rally in the seventh inning of game two.
Hannah Absher, Jillian Bohnert, Lee Griffin and Kelsey Prater all took the Eagles deep as UPIKE (6-6) outhit them 13-2 in game one and 10-8 in the finale.
Alexandra Qull (2-2) earned the win in game one after allowing just two hits in a shutout four innings with four strikeouts, while Lindsay Floyd (2-1) scattered eight hits for four runs, of which one was earned, with four strikeouts in seven innings to grab the win in game two.
Kitty Raymond and Absher both went 3 for 3 in game one, while Lee Griffin was the RBI leader with five after a second-inning, two-out grand slam. Lee Grffin, Prater, Absher and Ashley Goines all tallied two hits in the second game with one of Prater's being a home run and Goines roping a double.
Prater drove in a team-best four runs in the 6-4 win and Jordan Gentry and Raymond added the other two RBIs.
After Lee Griffin's four-run shot in just the second inning of the opener, Alice Lloyd never recovered as the Bears added four more over the next two innings. UPIKE added six runs on four hits in the fifth inning to completely slam the door shut.
It was smooth sailing again in the next game as the Bears posted a 6-0 lead after scoring two runs in the sixth inning. But the Eagles brought the pressure in their final three outs, scoring the first run on a groundout and the next on an error in the infield. Aly Webb hit an RBI single to make it 6-3 before Madison Minks hustled home from third on a passed ball to tally the final run.
With a runner on second with two outs, Samantha Sturgill represented the tying run at the plate, but she struck out swinging to bring the game to a close.
