Baseball Wraps Up Cumberland Series with Two Losses

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The home portion of the University of Pikeville baseball team's season is over as they dropped two games to Cumberland (Tenn.) on Saturday, losing 4-2 in the opener and 7-2 in game two.

The Bears (20-20, 3-12 MSC) have one Mid-South Conference series left at Lindsey Wilson on Friday and Saturday where they will be battling for the No. 6 seed in the MSC Tournament with Shawnee State (Ohio). SSU is 4-10 in league play heading into next weekend, while UPIKE is 3-12.

Up next for UPIKE is a trip to Alice Lloyd at 1 p.m. ET on Monday in Pippa Passes, Ky.

With the weekend sweep of the Bears, Cumberland  improves to 23-24 overall and 6-9 in the MSC. The Phoenix currently control the fifth spot in the league standings.

Cumberland 4, UPIKE 2

Jay Vincent hit his second home run of the season and six Bears had one hit each, but UPIKE was still outhit 7-6 overall on its way to a 4-2 loss to Cumberland.

The Phoenix didn't have any extra-base hits, but used a three-run fourth inning to gain the lead for good. Both teams scored one more run each in the eighth, but in the end it was the fourth-inning rally that turned the tide for Cumberland.

Travis Dohr improved to 7-4 with the win after lasting 7 1/3 innings in his start with two runs allowed on five hits and five strikeouts against four walks. Dalton Dahley dropped to 4-2 with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks in four innings.

Vincent hit his long ball to far past the right-field fence as the leadoff batter in the second, but Cumberland was able to comeback with three runs on four hits and an error in the fourth. The first run scored on a wild pitch, the second on an Allen single and the third run scored on a throwing error by the shortstop.

Down 4-1, UPIKE wouldn't score again until Perez hit a bases-loaded groundout in the eighth to get within two runs. Alec Barba led off the ninth with a single and eventually made it to third on a pair of outs, but failed to come home.

Cumberland 7, UPIKE 2

The Phoenix outhit UPIKE 11-8 in game two, including home runs by Kevin Connolly and Caleb Kellogg on their way to a 7-2 win in the series finale. Justin Beatty collected three hits and Anthony Roberts had two in the loss. Beatty and Barba drove in the Bears' two runs.

Bruce Bell dropped to 1-1 with the loss after allowing five runs on six hits in three innings, while Jason Wullenwaber picked up a complete-game win, scattering eight hits for two runs with seven strikeouts.

Cumberland scored five of their seven runs in the first two innings as Connolly's home run was in the first at-bat of the game and Austin Krajnak drove in the other two runs of the inning with a double. The second inning featured another leadoff blast from Kellogg and an RBI double by Hector Morales to make it 5-0 heading into the third inning.

Four singles led to two runs for the Phoenix in the fifth to end their scoring as the rest of the offense in the game was single runs by UPIKE in the fifth and sixth innings.

Beatty had an RBI single in the fifth and Barba hit a run-scoring single in the sixth, but that's all the Bears had left in the tank. Beatty singled in the seventh, but that was the final hit of the game.
