PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- A late home run by Anthony Roberts got the University of Pikeville baseball team within a run of Georgetown in the eighth inning, but a four-run ninth helped the Tigers to a 10-5 win in the series finale on Sunday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
With the Mid-South Conference sweep, Georgetown moves to 25-9 overall and 9-3 in the conference, while UPIKE drops to 17-14 overall and 1-8 in league play.
The Bears' Monday doubleheader with Johnson (Tenn.) has been canceled due to forecasted rain. The next regularly scheduled game is at Shawnee State at 3 p.m. ET on Friday in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Georgetown 6, UPIKE 5
UPIKE was outhit 16-10 overall despite Jorge Perez going 3 for 4 with an RBI. Travis Haen and Josh Bailey tallied two hits each, but Georgetown hit a pair of home runs and got three hits each from both Brandon Benson and Rodnee Little.
Bryce Carden dropped to 2-4 with the loss, allowing five runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings, while Kyle Fieger moved to 7-1 as he allowed five runs on 10 hits as well with five strikeouts in 7 2/3. Ryan Pearman collected the save in 1 1/3 shutdown innings, giving him a save in all three games during the weekend.
Two-out hits hurt and Georgetown tallied a pair in the second and third innings to take an early lead.
Benson hit a shallow, bases-loaded single to left in the second inning to drive in two runs, and then Ryan Viramontes went deep on two outs in the third to make it 3-0.
Georgetown scored for a third straight inning in the fourth as Little drove home Kyle Jackson with a single after he had led off the frame with a double. One batter later, Viramontes struck again with two outs, roping an RBI single to center to take a 5-0 lead.
But after three empty frames, UPIKE finally got to Fieger in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs on four hits and an error. Perez's single to center scored one run and Bailey came home on the hit as well when the Tiger's catcher threw a ball away to the outfield.
UPIKE continued to claw back in the inning as Matt Peterson hit an RBI double and Alec Barba lifted a sacrifice fly to right before Fieger could get out of trouble.
Suddenly it was just a 5-4 Georgetown lead as both teams went into a pitcher's duel. For the Tigers, it was the starter Fieger keeping the bats quiet, while for UPIKE it was Sewell, who got the last out of the fourth inning, and hadn't allowed any runs for the past three frames.
It wasn't until the eighth inning that the crooked numbers reappeared on the scoreboard. The Tigers went up 6-4 on a Little single past the shortstop, forcing the Bears to go to the pen for Bruce Bell. Roberts got that run back in the bottom half though on a rocket home run to left field that cleared the fence with ease.
It was 6-5 Georgetown heading into the ninth when Ryan Garner drew a leadoff walk, allowing his pinch runner to steal second and advance to third on a wild throw from the catcher. That set up a sac fly from Jackson to make it 7-5, followed by an RBI double by Sam Medina to get to 8-5.
In the next at bat, Little went deep to left and what was a one-run game heading into the ninth was now a 10-5 Tiger lead. UPIKE went three up, three down to end things in the bottom of the ninth. Â
