PIKEVILLE, Ky. – It's a new opponent for the University of Pikeville football team as it faces NCAA Div. II power Carson-Newman for the first time in program history on Thursday.
Kickoff from Jefferson City, Tenn., is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Burke-Tarr Stadium.
Carson-Newman finished seventh in the Southern Athletic Conference a season ago, putting together a 4-7 overall record, but prior to that it had finished with a winning record in four straight seasons. In fact, last year's mark was just the third losing record for the Eagles in the last 38 years.
C-N has won five national titles, the last in 1989, and boasts an overall record of 612-333-32.
For the first time since 1980, C-N will have a new head coach in Mike Turner, although this is his 34th year as part of the program. Turner will also be breaking in a new quarterback as 6-0 sophomore Derrick Evans will take the first snap after playing in just four games last season. He is a threat on the ground as well, rushing for a pair of touchdowns as a freshman.
UPIKE is looking to avoid going 0-2 to start the season for the first time since 2010 after falling 28-14 last Thursday at Campbellsville. Quarterback Sani Warren will look to get in a better rhythm after playing for the first time since week three of 2016 when he was injured at Eastern Kentucky.
Warren completed just 13 of 29 passes, but did find out he had a new, tall target in Arites Clark as the redshirt freshman hauled in six catches for 92 yards.
